How to wash a synthetic wig: step-by-step guide

Knowing how to wash a synthetic wig is the key to keeping its shape, shine and softness for much longer. With a few simple, consistent habits, it will look natural wash after wash. In this guide we explain, step by step, how often to wash it, which products to use, how to dry and store it, and the most common mistakes to avoid.

How often to wash a synthetic wig

How often depends on how much you wear it, the weather and your daily routine. As a general guide, washing it every 10 to 15 wears is usually enough. If you wear it for many hours at a time, sweat easily or spend time in smoky or dusty places, you may need to wash it a little sooner.

Washing too often also wears out the fibre, so aim for a balance. Between washes, simply brush it gently and let it air to keep it fresh.

Synthetic wigs come with their style and fall set at the factory thanks to the fibre’s memory. That is a big advantage: after washing, the style tends to return to its original shape with almost no effort. In return, you need to be especially careful with heat, its main enemy.

How to wash a synthetic wig step by step

Before you start, have a wide-tooth comb, a shampoo made for synthetic fibre and a wig conditioner or softening spray to hand. Avoid products for natural hair: they are usually too harsh and contain ingredients that weigh down or dry out the fibre.

  • Detangle while dry: comb carefully from the ends up to the roots to loosen any knots before wetting it.
  • Prepare the water: fill a basin with cold or lukewarm water. Never use hot water: it can permanently distort the fibre.
  • Apply the shampoo: dissolve a small amount in the water and submerge the wig. Move it gently, without rubbing or twisting.
  • Rinse thoroughly: rinse with clean, cold water until all the shampoo is gone.
  • Condition: apply conditioner along the lengths, avoiding the cap and the scalp area. Leave it for a few minutes, then rinse.

Always handle it gently: synthetic fibre is more fragile when wet. Don’t rub it against the bottom of the basin or wring it out like a cloth; that is how tangles and frizz appear, and they are very hard to fix afterwards.

If your wig has a lace base or a delicate parting, take special care not to pull on that area. A gentle, unhurried wash is always the best investment in making your wig last longer.

How to dry and store your wig

Drying matters as much as washing: doing it wrong is one of the most common causes of damage.

Drying

Remove excess water by pressing gently with a towel, without rubbing. Place the wig on a stand or mannequin head and let it air-dry, away from radiators, hairdryers and direct sunlight. Heat damages the fibre and changes the shape of the style.

Storage

Once it is completely dry, keep it on a stand so it holds its volume, or in its box or a hairnet if you are travelling. Gentle brushing keeps its natural fall.

Mistakes to avoid when washing your synthetic wig

  • Using hot water or a hairdryer on a high setting.
  • Rubbing, twisting or brushing hard while it is wet.
  • Using products meant for natural hair or that contain alcohol.
  • Storing it damp or squashed: it encourages odours and distorts the fibre.
  • Washing it more often than necessary.
