How to put on a wig securely and naturally
Knowing how to put on a wig makes the difference between feeling comfortable all day or forgetting you are even wearing it. Good placement gives you confidence, a natural finish and the peace of mind that matters so much, especially when your wig is part of a delicate time such as cancer treatment. In this guide we explain, step by step, how to prepare, secure and adjust it, whether or not you have your own hair.
At our Barcelona shop we support everyone calmly and without rushing. Here are the essentials so you can practise at home with confidence.
Before you start: prepare your hair and skin
A comfortable fit starts with a good base. If you have your own hair, flatten it as much as possible. If you have lost your hair, treat your scalp gently.
- Long or medium hair: make flat braids or a low, evenly spread bun to avoid bumps.
- Short hair: comb it back and secure it with flat hairpins.
- No hair: keep the skin clean, dry and moisturised, and avoid greasy creams just before putting on the wig.
- Wig cap: keep a wig cap in your skin tone or hair colour to hand.
The wig cap is your best ally: it holds your own hair in place, protects sensitive skin and helps the wig sit evenly.
How to put on a wig step by step
With the base ready, putting on the wig is easy. Take it slowly the first few times and do it in front of a well-lit mirror.
- 1. Put on the wig cap: pull it on from your forehead towards the nape, covering all your hair or scalp.
- 2. Hold the wig from the inside: grip it with both hands by the ear tabs, with the label at the back.
- 3. Rest it on your forehead: place the front edge a couple of fingers above your eyebrows, following your natural hairline.
- 4. Slide it back: move the wig towards your nape in one smooth motion until it is centred.
- 5. Adjust the sides: check that the ear tabs are symmetrical and your ears are free.
Move around a little, tilt your head down and check that it doesn’t shift. If it feels loose, it is time to secure it better.
How to secure your wig: straps, adjusters and Velcro
How you secure it depends on whether you have your own hair and what feels most comfortable. Most modern wigs have very easy-to-use fastening systems.
- Inner adjustable straps: almost all wigs have Velcro or adjustable fasteners at the nape. Adjust them so they feel firm without being tight.
- Inner combs or clips: they anchor to your own hair at the temples and crown for extra hold.
- Adhesive tape or silicone bands: very useful when there is no hair, as they safely and gently increase grip on the skin.
- Non-slip band: a silicone strip around the front edge stops the wig slipping in heat or when you sweat.
If you are undergoing treatment and your skin is more sensitive, choose soft materials and gentle fastenings. If you notice discomfort or irritation, or have any questions about your skin, always consult your medical or oncology team. Our wigs for cancer patients in Barcelona are designed precisely for maximum comfort and lightness.
Tips for a natural, long-lasting finish
Once it is secure, a few small touches will make your wig look even more natural and stay put all day.
- Comb gently from the ends, without pulling at the roots.
- Soften the front edge with a little fringe or a few loose strands.
- Avoid direct heat sources if your wig is synthetic.
- At the end of the day, remove it carefully from the nape so as not to strain the fibres.
Regular maintenance extends the life of your wig and keeps it looking natural. You can follow our care and maintenance tips to wash and store it properly. And if you are looking for a cool alternative for home or hotter days, turbans are a very comfortable option.
